Here We Go – God Forbid: Conservative Baptist Network Calls Out Southern Baptist Seminary Professor and Pastor James Merritt for Promoting Homosexual Son Jonathan Merritt’s Sermon – Daniel Whyte III Tells Pastors and “Baptist Seminary Professors” and Other So-called Christian Leaders, I Know That You Love Your Children but God Expects You to Not in Any Way Endorse or Support Your Children’s Abominations and Sins. Sad to Say, Because Pastors and Pastor’s Wives and So-called Church Leaders Have Compromised on the Issue of Homosexuality, Including the Once-conservative Evangelicals and the Once-conservative Baptists, Now They Are Compromising Even Further With Their Children Coming Out as Homosexuals and Lesbians in an Attempt to Try to Win Their Children Back to Them and This Is Not the Way to Win Their Children Back. You Have to Understand That You Will Not Win Them Back This Way Because They Have Cast the Word of God Behind Their Backs and Have Chosen to Follow the Devil. In Fact, They Will Run Further Away From You if They See You Compromise With Them and Try to Appease Them. You Have to Stand Against the Devil and Sin and the Abomination of Homosexuality as a Christian and Especially as a Pastor. The Best Way to Love Your Adult Children Who Have Left the Faith Is to Pray for Them. Dr. James Merritt, a Man Whom I Have Respected for Many Years, Should Resign From the Church and Especially From Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary IMMEDIATELY. I Emphasize Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Because He Is Influencing Future Pastors. If Jonathan Merritt Is Still a Member of James Merritt’s Church, He Needs to Be Disciplined Which Means He Needs to Be Put Out of the Church Immediately if He Is Not Going to Repent of His Evil Ways With Fruits of Repentance, For as the Holy Bible Says, “A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.” Also, the Pastor and the Deacons of the Church Ought to Encourage Him to Get Out of the Christian Journalism Space That He Occupies, Because He Is Causing Confusion Among God’s People and Among the Christian Youth Groups of America, as He Is Writing Some Decent “Christian” Articles in a Major Publication and Many People Did Not Know He Was a Homosexual. If He Is Going to Continue Being a Homosexual He Needs to Declare That to the Whole Christian World — I Assume the Whole “gay” World Already Knows About It. Dr. James Merritt Needs to Inform the Whole Christian World as Well, Otherwise, He Would Be in Collusion With His Son in Causing Confusion in the Christian Community and in the Church Across America and Throughout the World. At the Same Time, However, if the Southern Baptist Convention Pastors Are Going to Keep as Southern Baptist President Pastor Ed Litton, Who Became a Puppet for Andy Stanley’s Effort to Promote Homosexuality in the Southern Baptist Convention and the Evangelical Community by Reading Word for Word His Talking Points, Then the Southern Baptist Convention Really Doesn’t Have Any Moral Authority to Tell James Merritt to Do Anything. Besides That, Many in the Southern Baptist Convention Knew About Dr. James Merritt’s Son Being a Homosexual Long Before Now but Chose Not to Say Anything About It. Pastors and Bishops and So-called Church Leaders, Do Not Commit the Tragic Sin of Loving Your Children Too Much. Do Not Compromise the Gospel and the Word of God for Your Children’s Sake. Don’t Try to Make Room for Your Disobedient Abominable Child in the Church and Try to Make Them Accepted in the Beloved When Their Behaviour Is Not Acceptable. All of This Will Only Backfire on You in This Life and in the Life to Come. And Do Not Be Afraid to Tell Them That Even Though You Love Them if They Continue in This Lifestyle of Homosexuality or Lesbianism They Are Going to HELL. Telling Them That Truth and Praying for Them Will Probably Be the Only Way to Get Them Truly Saved and Out of That Demonic and Abominable Lifestyle. And by the Way, Don’t Be Afraid to Tell the People in Your Church Family Who Are Divorced and Remarried Without Biblical Grounds and Are “living in Adultery” That They Are Going to Hell Too if They Did It After They Got Saved and They Knew Better, for as I Have Told You Before, the Divorce and Remarriage and “living in Adultery” Sin Is the Sin That Led the Church to Accept the Abomination of Homosexuality and Lesbianism in the Church. And in Case You’re Wondering, God Forbid, if One of My Seven Children Ever Came Out as a Homosexual or Lesbian, I’m Going to Say the Exact Same Thing That I Am Saying About Dr. Merritt and Jonathan Merritt. And by the Way That Is With the Full Knowledge That Because I Have Preached Hard Against the Abomination of Homosexuality and Lesbianism for Many Years Trying to Save the Church From the Trouble She Is in Now and Trying to Save America From the Trouble She Is in Now, Sad to Say, It Has Been the Evangelical Church and So-called Evangelical Christians Who Have Targeted My Children to Try to Get Them to Believe and Accept That Homosexuality and Lesbianism Is Not a Sin and That Homosexuals and Lesbians Should Be Allowed as Members in the Church and Have Tried to Demonically Turn My Children Against My Preaching That They Have Heard All of Their Lives, but I Have Expected That and I Am Praying for My Children to Stand Against This Sodomite Onslaught of Homosexuality and Lesbianism Sanctioned by the Church and the Government and Because the Church and America Have Sanctioned These Abominations, as I Have Told You Many Times God Is Slowly but Surely Dismantling and Destroying the False Laodicean Church in America and America Herself Which I Have Warned You About for Many Years and by the Grace of God, None of My Words Have Fallen to the Ground.
STATEMENT: Promoting homosexual preachers is not loving, biblical, or Baptist
Nov. 23, 2021
In a social media post, Nov. 22, James Merritt, Southern Baptist pastor and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS) visiting professor, promoted a sermon by his son, Jonathan Merritt, a self-described homosexual man.
Scripture is clear that homosexuality is a grave sin (1 Cor. 6:9-10, Rom. 1:24-28), and that sin separates mankind from God (Isaiah 59:2, Rom. 6:23). To present to Southern Baptists a man living in unrepentant sin as someone to whom they should listen for a sermon that is “faithful to the gospel,” as the elder Merritt tweeted, is wholly illogical and demonstrably dangerous. For one who is employed by a Southern Baptist seminary receiving Cooperative Program tithe dollars to promote an unrepentant sinner—no matter whose son he is—as a trustworthy preaching source is a betrayal of trusting Southern Baptists.
The Conservative Baptist Network calls on SEBTS President Danny Akin and the SEBTS board of trustees to give sincere attention to this grievous situation, which counters Southern Baptists’ commitment to Scripture as inerrant, sufficient, and authoritative and opposes the Baptist Faith and Message 2000. The Network further calls on Southern Baptists to pray for the Merritt family in what is a public and certainly painful situation, and specifically for Jonathan Merritt, that the Lord would bring godly sorrow which “produces repentance leading to salvation” (2 Cor. 7:10).
Moreover, while some have accused the Conservative Baptist Network of being divisive for suggesting certain SBC leaders have departed from their biblical beliefs, the unbiblical and divisive promotion of Jonathan Merritt by the most recent chairman of the SBC Committee on Resolutions demonstrates the need for the Network all too clearly. And, as in the case of President Ed Litton’s blatant, serial plagiarism of sermons and even personal experiences, many Convention leaders stand united in silence when the offender is one of their friends.
This growing drift from the guardrails of Scripture and from long-held but increasingly-threatened Baptist distinctives demands reform at the top levels of the SBC and demonstrates yet again the necessity of a Conservative Baptist Network.

The Conservative Baptist Network (CBN) released a statement Wednesday night (Nov. 23) blasting Dr. James Merritt’s endorsement of his son’s recent sermon. Jonathan Merritt identifies as a homosexual. Merritt is a Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) pastor and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS) visiting pastor.
Merritt, who is also lead pastor of Cross Pointe Church in Duluth, Georgia, and former SBC President (2000-2002), shared a message with a link on his Twitter account earlier this week (Nov. 22) saying, “Good Shepherd New York • 11.21.21 https://youtu.be/JtZla6bnxn8 via @YouTube I don’t agree with my loved son @JonathanMerritt on everything to be sure. But I encourage you to listen to his message on Mark 13. It is both brilliant and faithful to the gospel and the coming of Jesus!”
CBN wrote on its Twitter page, “Promoting homosexual preachers is not loving, biblical, or Baptist,” then provided a link to the full statement.
Who is Jonathan Merritt?
Jonathan is an award-winning contributor for The Atlantic, author, speaker, and holds a Master of Divinity from SEBTS. On his birthday this year (Aug. 4), Jonathan described himself on his Instagram page as, “a gay man, beloved by God, who has endured the worst the world could throw at him and fought his way to health and wholeness.”
His post recalled a day in 2012 when someone publicly outed his sexual orientation, calling it “painful” and a “betray[al].” Jonathan shared that the trauma resulted in a “boatload of therapy” just to be able to “love the delightful human that God made when God made me.”
According to his post, this is the first time he’s written about his “identity” online because of trauma that left him “bruised and untrusting.” He added that he is “dead dog afraid” to be vulnerable to the public.
Jonathan wrote: “This disconnect between my private and public life has felt unnecessary and unsustainable. I don’t want to live fearful of the opinions of strangers or the venom of bigots.” Wanting to enter the second half of his life with more “authenticity, alignment, and integrity than I exhibited in the first half,” Jonathan said he wants to make clear he’s a gay man who’s beloved by God.
